Backstreet Boys, Art Alexakis Perform at Do Something Teen Charity Awards

"I grew up in a housing project in Los Angeles with a single mom," Everclear frontman Art Alexakis told the audience at the Do Something Awards at the Apollo Theater in New York Monday night.

"Let's hear it for the single moms and single dads," he then said, producing a thunderous applause.

The Do Something Awards celebrated the achievements of the nation's young world-changers - many who overcame extreme adversity - to earn five $10,000 grants to help them achieve their dreams.

A $100,000 grand prize will be awarded to one of them on Vh1 on July 19.

Alexakis performed for the crowd of friends and fans, along with the Backstreet Boys and Peter Buffett, while The Office's Brian Baumgartner and The Vampire Diaries' Sara Canning and Zach Roerig presented.

Honored were Vh1 President Tom Calderone, Director Brett Ratner, and JetBlue Airways exec Icema Gibbs.
