Anna Wintour got visibly choked up while presenting the Trophée des Arts award to her friend, designer Marc Jacobs, at the French Institute-Alliance Francaise's gala at the Plaza Hotel Thursday night.
"At the end of [a meeting] with Marc, I feel totally outclassed, out of touch and certainly completely out of shape, but also at the same time, absolutely and wonderfully exhilarated because Marc is someone who makes you want to rush out and do things," the notoriously stoic Vogue editor-in-chief told the audience, her voice quivering.
"I urge you to think about a trip to China," Wintour also heeded to Jacobs.
"I've just come back from Shanghai and Beijing, and everywhere I went... I heard the same thing: 'Ms. Wintour, do you know Marc Jacobs? Could you possibly get me Marc Jacobs autograph? His signed photograph? Please ask Marc Jacobs to come here and to collaborate with the Chinese artists.' So Marc, on behalf on 1.3 billion Chinese, consider yourself invited. And knowing you, you'll come back speaking fluent Mandarin and with a few Tai chi moves under your belt."
Also awarded at the ceremony was CEO of Total Christophe de Margerie, while guests like Alexa Chung and Rachel Feinstein watched on.
