"Thank you for coming out. This is early," says John Mayer.

Mayer is talking to the thousands who woke up before eight - or camped out overnight - to catch him play three songs at NBC's Today Show Friday.

"I think the fact that [all of these people] lost sleep, a natural resource, means they'll [clap]," Mayer told Matt Lauer when Lauer asked if he ever got nervous people wouldn't respond well to a show.

Mayer performed "Crossroads," "Half of My Heart," and "Waiting for the World to Change" for the exuberant crowd, dressed like he was off to a golf tournament afterwards.
