"Age doesn't matter," the 17-year old told us, of her controversially young age.
"I wanted to be Miss America, and I thought: 'Why should I wait? Let me be an example to people my age that you can accomplish your goals at any age'."
Scanlan added that her dream wasn't always to be Miss America.
"When I was ten, I wanted to be president of the United States," Scanlan said, noting that she still intends to become a criminal prosecutor, and a judge.
"Miss America is good training for president," Scanlan added.
"It's good practice getting people to vote [for you]!"
